Synopsis
This article describes an issue where a certificate error displays "The certificate was not issued by a trusted certificate authority" when connecting to a site using core access.
Problem or Goal
If Untrusted SSL site browsing is enabled on the role, the following error message will appear:
The page you are trying to access comes from a server with the following certificate problems:

The certificate was not issued by a trusted certificate authority

The following image illustrates the warning message, which is displayed, when a trusted server root certificate is missing:

Cause
This issue occurs because the web server's root CA has not been installed in the Trusted Server CA store on the Pulse Connect Secure device.
Solution
To resolve this issue, ensure to import the issuer root and intermediate CA of the certificate installed on the backend server.  Pulse Secure will pre-install all public certificate authorities at the time of the release.  However, this may be a problem if the Pulse Connect Secure device is running an older version (older than 5 years) or if the backend server is using a certificate issued from a private CA.  Please follow the instructions below to install the certificate chain on the Pulse Connect Secure device.
  1. Login to the admin console
  2. Navigate to System > Configuration > Trusted Server CAs
  3. Click Imported Trusted Server CA button
  4. Next to Import From, click Browse
  5. Select the certificate file to import
  6. Click Import Certificate
Note: If the backend server is using a self-signed certificate, then install a copy of the self-signed certificate under Trusted Server CAs.  Administrator will need to make a note that if the self-signed certificate is changed, the new certificate must be installed on the device to avoid the following message.
