KB40331 - Java applets crash with Internal Error using macOS Sierra (10.12) or Safari 10

Synopsis
This article describes an issue where Java applets (JSAM, HOB Applet, etc) hosted by the PCS crash after upgrading to macOS Sierra (10.12) or Safari 10.
Problem or Goal
When launching a Java applet (JSAM, HOB Applet, etc.) on macOS Sierra (10.12) or Safari 10, the application fails to launch with the following message: 
 
Internal Error

An uncaught exception was raised.  Choose "Continue" to continue running in an 
inconsistent state.  Choose "Crash" to halt the application and file a bug with
Crash Reporter.  Choosing "Crash" will result in the loss of all unsaved data.

Clicking on "Show Details" provides the following information:
 
Exception Name: JavaNative Exception Description: 
java.lang.NullPointerException at sun.awt.SunToolkit.getSystemEventQueueInplPP

Cause
This issue is due to a bug in the underlying Oracle Java virtual machine that causes Java applet execution to crash on macOS Sierra (10.12) or Safari 10.  This issue is not limited to Pulse Secure product lines.  For more information, please refer to JDK-8165867.
Solution
Pulse Secure has confirmed the issue is resolved by Oracle and is available in the 8u112 public release.  For more information, please refer to the Java release notes.
