Synopsis
The article describes an issue where launching Java based clients (Java Secure Application Manager (JSAM), Premier (HOB) Java RDP Applet, Java Telnet and Java SSH) will fail when only Java 9 installed.
Problem or Goal
When an end user attempts to launch Java Secure Application Manager (JSAM), Premier (HOB) Java RDP Applet, Java Telnet and Java SSH, the following components will fail to load with no error message.

Cause
Oracle has released only 64-bit version of JRE 9 and JDK 9.
  • For Windows operating system, launching java based clients will fail with Internet Explorer browser and using Pulse Secure Application Launcher on Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome when previous 32-bit Java 8 and below was not installed or removed.
    • When launching with Internet Explorer on a 64-bit machine, 32-bit instance of IE and Java are launched by default.
    • For 8.2RX and above, PSAL is 32-bit application and will fail to launch
  • For macOS, only JSAM is failing to launch (Hob,Telnet and SSH works),Pulse Secure is investigating the issue with JSAM.
Solution
Pulse Secure is currently root causing the following issue. The following article will be updated once a solution is available.

Workaround:

  • For Windows operating systems, ensure not uninstall previous JRE versions (32-bit).  If uninstalled, please reinstall 32-bit JRE 8 to allow launching Java components through Pulse Connect Secure / Pulse Policy Secure devices.
  • For macOS, it is not recommended to install Java 9,suggestion is to continue using Java 8 until a fix is provided.
