Synopsis
This article describes an issue that occurs on a Mac using HOB applet to RDP to Windows 10 version 1607 machine where the connection intermittently fails with error: "A protocol error has occurred. Errorcode: HLJWT502E".
Problem or Goal
When using HOB RDP Applet from Mac OS Sierra or High Sierra to connect to a Windows 10 v.1607 system, the connection fails with error:
"A protocol error has occurred. Errorcode: HLJWT502E. Reason: java.lang.Error: invalid device id 0xffffffff".

Windows users using the same HOBLink RDP Applet to remote to a Windows 10 v.1607 system are not affected.

Mac users may report that the issue is intermittent and that they are able to connect sometimes.

Cause
The device ID 0xffffffff is outside of the range of valid ID's that are assigned by HOB JWT,  If the HOB JWT does not recognize the device ID of the remote host, this error can occur.
Solution
To resolve this issue, a parameter can be added to the HTML for the applet on the PCS device, to ignore the device ID.
  1. Go to Users > Resource Profiles and select the HOB Applet bookmark.
  2. In the HTML section, add an additional parameter as follows:
         <param name="RDPDRIGNOREINVALIDDEVS"
value="YES">
