Information

Last Modified Date3/15/2016 8:00 PM
Synopsis
When TLS 1.1 and higher is enabled on the Pulse Connect Secure (PCS) device, Network Connect fails to launch on Ubuntu.  If the security setting on the PCS device are modified to Accept TLS only, this will resolve the issue.
Problem or Goal
When TLS 1.1 and higher is enabled, Network Connect fails to launch and produces the following Java exception error message:

Fatal: Initialization Error: Could not initialize applet. For more information, click “more information button”.
....
Fatal: Initialization Error: Unknown Main-Class. Could not determine the main class for this application.
Cause
This issue occurs due to TLS 1.1 and 1.3 are disabled (by default) in OpenJDK version 1.7.0.95 with IcedTea web plugin 7.  Please refer OpenJDK bug report at:  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-7/+bug/1314113

Java version can be checked with the following commands:

java -version

To know the current current library in use (if multiple Java versions installed):

alternatives --display java

Solution
Currently, OpenJDK and IcedTea 8 plugin are not supported.  The current recommendation is to install Oracle JRE 8.

For installation instructions for Oracle Java and configuring Java on the Linux system, please refer to http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml#install
