KB40933 - Pulse Secure Desktop installation fails and rolls back when Kaspersky Total Security is installed

This article describes an issue where Pulse Secure Desktop client installation rolls back when Kaspersky Total Security Software is installed with settings that block software from being installed.
Problem or Goal
Pulse Desktop Client installation starts then is interrupted with the message:  

Pulse Secure Setup Wizard ended prematurely

Upon clicking the Finish button the installation rolls back and Pulse does not get installed.

If Kaspersky Total Security software is installed on the client and the Self-Defense mechanism is enabled, this will prevent any modifications to files, registry entries and other system files.  With this setting enabled, the Pulse Desktop installation will fail.


Follow these steps to resolve this issue:

  1. Open Kaspersky Total Security.
  2. In the lower left corner of the main application window, click Settings.

  1. In the Settings window, click the General tab and click the switch to disable the protection

  1. In the Settings window, click the Additional tab and select Self Defense

  1. Uncheck Enable Self-Defense

  1. Reinstall Pulse Desktop Client.
  2. From Kaspersky re-enable Self-Defense and Protection to return AV settings to default.
