Synopsis
This article describes the  behavioral changes in Android 10 on Pulse Client for Android 7.2.4
Problem or Goal
Android 10 has been released for Pixel Devices, this article highlights the behavioral changes as Pulse Mobile client 7.2.4 will support Android 10 and is planned for release in week of 4 November.

Behavioral changes :
  •  Storage Access Behavior Change from Android 10.
  •  Behavior Change when no certificates available while connecting VPN.
  •  Behavior Change In installing certificates.
  •  Installing Certificate through Pulse App in Android 10.
  •  New behavior changes in Android Pulse Client w.r.t PWS (Pulse Workspace).
  •  From Android 10, Non-resettable device identifiers like IMEI, Serial Number etc. will not be accessible by default.
Cause
Solution
1. Storage Access Behavior Change from Android 10

Old behavior on pre-Android 10 devices 

When the User Clicks on “Pick” button to select a certificate, the below page will be displayed

After Clicking “OK” button, the user can access the files from the device

In case, user chooses the wrong extension. user will be notified with a toast message like below

Note: In Earlier version of Android (9 & below), we use to filter the files by extension, So the user will be presented with the files which have supported extensions but from Android 10 we are doing post validation of file extensions, meaning: we will show all the files (Due to Android restriction) and validation will be performed only after the file is selected. If the user picks up a wrong extension “Selected file is not a valid file type” toast message will be given

2. Behavior Change when no certificates available while connecting VPN

Old Behavior

With the Android 9 and older versions, if there is no certificate installed and the user tries to connect the VPN, Android system will show the “Credential Storage Access” permission when user accepts it, “No Certificate found” dialog will be shown, from there the user can click the “Install certificate” option and can choose the certificate from storage and install it

New behavior

In Android 10, when there are no certificates installed and the user tries to connect the VPN Android system will show the “Credential Storage Access” permission, when user accepts it Failed to connect to the server! Check your certificatetoast message will be displayed

3Behavior Change In installing certificates

Old Behavior

User can able to Install the user certificates while adding a VPN profile Click on Add connection à Authentication Type à certificates in KeyStore à Verify/ chose from KeyStore à Install Certificate

New Behavior:

In Android 10, If the user tries to Install a certificate while adding a connection the below In-App notification will be displayed. Clicking will display "No user-selectable certificates available. you may install a valid certificate from the "Settings" button in the application's menu."

4. Installing Certificate through Pulse App in Android 10

User must navigate to Pulse App menu

Click on Settings  Install Private Key / Certificates  Click on Pick to select the certificate and Install it

5New behavior changes in Android Pulse Client w.r.t PWS (Pulse Workspace)
  1. While on-boarding the Pulse Secure Android client running on Android 10 with PWS, new notification is added which end-user need to click to continue and complete the enrollment process as shown below

If Admin changes the VPN Profile pushed from PWS in the Pulse client from Manual type to On-Demand type and if App is not running in the foreground, then a new notification is added which end-user need to click to continue and complete the On-Demand VPN setup as shown below

If Admin performs the Full Device Wipe for the enrolled device and if App is not running in the foreground, then a new notification is added which end-user need to click to continue and complete the Factory reset as shown below

6. From Android 10, Non-resettable device identifiers like IMEI, Serial Number etc. will not be accessible by default.
