Synopsis
This article describes an issue where PDC 9.1R3 and above authenticating with a PCS server running code below 9.1R3 fails with the error ‘rejected smart card’ in the logs
Problem or Goal
PDC 9.1R3 and above authenticating with a PCS server running below 9.1R3 fails with the error ‘rejected smart card’ in the logs.

Working scenarios :
  • A client running a version lower than 9.1R3 connecting to a server running a version lower than 9.1R3 works fine with smart card.
  • A client running a version 9.1R3 and above connecting to a server running a version 9.1R3 and above works fine with smart card once smart card logon is enabled on server under the Pulse client connections:
User-added image
  • A client running a version lower than 9.1R3 connecting to a server running a version 9.1R3 and above works fine with smart card.
Cause
With introduction of EKU/OID filtering feature in 9.1R3 PCS code, the client now expects smart card logon feature enabled on server while using smart card. This feature is available only in the newer server code 9.1R3 and later.
Solution
Pulse Secure is working towards a fix and fix will be on PDC .We will update the ETA of the fix once available soon.
