Synopsis
Terminal Session RDP users get black desktop background and fuzzy/grainy fonts after upgrading the appliance to version 9.1R9 or later
Problem or Goal
Terminal Session RDP users get black desktop background and fuzzy/grainy fonts if they use admin created TS bookmarks where 'Desktop Background and Font Smoothing' is not enabled under Desktop/Display Settings.
Cause

Scenario: If the appliance is upgraded from 9.1R8.1 or before to 9.1R9 or later, we can experience the change in default behavior.

By default, Desktop background and Font Smoothing are disabled for any Windows Terminal Session.

Before 9.1R8.1 version, the desktop background was getting enabled by default only in windows 10. Enabling desktop background by default was an unexpected behavior which occurred only in Windows 10 OS and was considered a bug. This was happening due to certain changes in MSTSC experience settings in Windows 10 OS and this bug was fixed in version 9.1R8.2.

Solution
The current behavior of launching the Windows Terminal session with desktop background and font smoothing disabled by default is the expected behavior and working as per design.

This issue can be mitigate by the following the below mentioned steps:
  1. For admin created bookmarks, please enable Desktop background and Font smoothing while creating the WTS bookmarks.
  • Please navigate to User role > Terminal Services tab > Add Sessions > Desktop settings (scroll to the bottom)

  1. For user created bookmarks,
  • First the admin has to enable Desktop Background and Font smoothing under "Allow users to modify display settings"(These are not considered as settings for user bookmark, it only gives option to user to modify settings)
